The use of ash in dyeing may be one of the very oldest uses of an added substance. By pouring boiling water over ash, lye is produced, a natural and strongly alkali solution that can be used to raise pH in dye processes.
The strength of the lye depends on the ration between ash and water. 100 g of ash in 1 L of water will produce a strong lye.
