Description

Seeds of Japanese indigo (Persicaria tinctoria) variant with light pink flowers.

Japanese indigo has been cultivated in Japan since the 4th century, and even longer in southern China. Japanese indigo is a subtropical annual and does not tolerate any frost at all. It produces considerably more indigo than woad, the traditional blue coloring plant cultivated in northern Europe, maybe 5-10 times more.

Precultivate indoors (or in a greenhouse) in late February to April. Transplant when all danger of frost has passed. Plant in rich soil and full sun. Keep plants well watered, during dry summers, water daily.

We divide our seeds in 3 categories based on how long they will keep: short, medium and long. Regardless of category, all seeds should be stored in a dry and cool place to stay viable. Short shelf life means that the seeds must be sown the year after they are harvested. Seeds with medium shelf life can be sown after 2 or 3 years, but will have a higher germination rate the first year after harvest. Seeds with a long shelf life can germinate even after several years (and in extreme cases after hundreds of years).

Seeds harvested in 2023. Short shelf life: use in 2024.

We only ship seeds to EU countries.
