Description
Knitting pattern for the Folkvang tam, pdf file for download.
Folkvang is a classic tam with a color pattern that is syncopated by strategic purl stitches, a nod to Bohus knitting, but symmetric and much simplified compared to traditional Bohus patterns.
The pattern gives two brim options – a single brim that begins with an Old Norwegian cast on, and a lined brim that begins with a provisional cast on. Both versions have corrugated ribbing that visually flows into the main stitch pattern.
Pattern for matching mittens is also available.
Size:
Adult size, approx. 57 cm / 22 1/2 inches head circumference.
Yarn:
4 skeins are used for a hat: one skein of main color (MC), one skein of background color (BC), and one skein each of contrast colors 1 and 2 (CC1 and CC2).
6 skeins are used for a hat and mittens set: two skeins of main color (MC), two skeins of background color (BC), and one skein each of contrast colors 1 and 2 (CC1 and CC2).
10 g of of Retrofutura Silkemerino (65 % merino, 35 % silk, 600 m / 100 g) is used for the lined version of the hat.
Gauge:
Stockinette in Silk Merino, knit on a 2.25 mm (US 1) needle: 27 sts x 13 rnds = 10 x 2.5 cm (4 x 1 inches).
Corrugated ribbing in Finull, knit on a 2.25 mm needle: 26 sts x 10 rnds = 10 x 2.5 cm (4 x 1 inches).
Colorwork in Finull, knit on a 2.5 mm (US 1½) needle: 26 sts x 32 rnds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).
Level:
The hat with a single brim is medium level. This pattern assumes basic knowledge of stranded colorwork, but uses no special techniques.
The hat with lined brim is suitable for advanced knitters, as a provisional cast on is used, then removed, and the brim closed.
