Description
Rauma 2-ply gammelserie – “old series” – consists of 100 % Norwegian wool and is spun by Rauma in Romsdalen, Norway.
2-ply gammelserie has a denser ply than Finull, which makes the yarn much more resistant to wear. 2-ply gammelserie can replace Finull, as it knits to the same gauge. It is especially well suited for socks and mittens, and indeed any clothing that gets a lot of wear. Can also be used for “bunadsstrømper”, the decorative socks used in Norwegian national costumes.
Weight per skein: 50 g (1.77 ounces).
Yardage per skein: 160 m (175 yards).
Yarn weight: fingering / super fine (1). 320 m per 100 g (350 yards per 3.53 ounces).
100% wool.
Astrid on the choice of this particular yarn for the shop:
I chose to carry Gammelserie in the shop exactly because it is old fashioned! I mean that in the sense that it looks and feels like yarn I have seen knitted into 19th and early 20th century knitted objects. From our time, we may look at Gammelserie as a densely plied yarn, but it is actually softer than historical yarns I have seen. In any case, Gammelserie blooms wonderfully when you wash your finished object, closing all the tiny gaps in stranded knitting. I find it interesting that a hard-wearing yarn can be made just by plying the strands extra, and that it then becomes possible to omit the addition of synthetic fibers. In a sense, Gammelserie is so old fashioned that it actually becomes the latest new thing.
