Single origin indigo from the indigo plant Indigofera tinctoria, cultivated and purified at the Taraiblue indigo farm in Rudrapur in the state of Uttarakhand in Indien, and shipped directly to us.
This indigo cake is for dyers who want to get really close to the origin of the genuine indigo dye. After harvest, the tropical plant is fermented in large tanks and the dye sedimented. The dye is sun dried and cut into “cakes” that are
usually powdered before sending them out, but in this case, the cakes are left in the shape they had when they dried. You can see in this lovely video how Taraiblue produces the dye.
Before use, powder at piece of the cake, for example by using a mortar. After that, this indigo can be used in all the same ways other indigo powders can; in a standard vat with sodium hydroxide and sodium dithionite, but also in organic vats of many types. Indigo is one of the few natural dyes that work well on linen and cotton, in addition to wool, silk, and alpaca.
As the cakes have quite different weights, they are divided in four groups by weight. The price is calculated from the average weight and the cake you receive when purchasing has a random weight in the interval you choose.
Group 1: 54-77 g
Group 2:78-100 g
Group 3: 101-122 g
Group 4: 124-146 g.
