Description
Midgaards Have Midsommer is a 3-ply, wet spun 100% Lithuanian linen yarn. This yarn is the color nature – unbleached and undyed, so the color and sheen is that of the linen fiber itself. We have carried this linen yarn at Midaards Have for many years under the name Midsommer. Retrofutura Linen is the same base, but dyed in a number of colors. Midsommer and Retrofutura Linen have the same exact weight and can easily be used in the same project.
For natural dyeing of linen, we recommend mordanting with aluminium acetate or 5 % tannic acid, then 20 % alum. The old dye manuals recommend drying linen between each step so it is completely dry before putting it into each bath. To speed the process up, it can be put in wet, but it does accept the dye better when dry. Especially with indigo dyeing, the difference is clear.
Much like other linen yarns, it may be slightly stiff initially, but softens considerably with use. Knitting this yarn is not rough on the hands, since it is quite thin.
The 3-ply linen is well suited for lace knitting, shawls, and summer clothing. When knitting a single thread, 2 skeins are enough for a large shawl or a loosely knit summer blouse. To work into a non-transparent fabric, hold a thread of linen together with a thread of silk, wool or alpaca.
Also excellent for weaving!
