Description
Knitting pattern for the Memory vest, pdf file for download.
The Memory Vest is covered in patterns that come from a child’s vest knit by my grandmother, Judith Harvest, in the first half of the 1970’s.
Having lived through WWII yarn rationing in England, she did not let any yarn go to waste. She made many garments out of odds and ends, and seems to have used whichever colors she happened to have. Here, the modern version is shown in coordinated colors, but they can of course be swapped for something else!
Size:
Women’s XS (S – M – L – XL – 2X – 3X) with a finished chest measurement of 83 (96 – 102 – 115 – 128 – 134 – 147) cm / 32 3⁄4 (37 3⁄4 – 40 1⁄4 – 45 1⁄2 – 50 1⁄2 – 53 – 58) inches. Vest is intended to be worn with about 10 cm (4 inches) of positive ease.
Yarn:
Rauma Finull PT2. 2-4 skeins of main color depending on size, one skein of white and one skein each of 8 contrast colors.
Gauge in stranded knitting:
25 stitches x 27 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 inches).
Level: Medium. This pattern assumes basic knowledge of stranded colorwork and uses steek stitches. Other than that, no special knitting techniques are used, and the vest would be a good choice for a first large colorwork project.
