Description

Dried and finely cut weld (Reseda luteola) from Turkey.

Weld is a domesticated plant that originates in the eastern Mediterranean and Asia. It has been cultivated for dyeing for 3000 years, and had already spread to large parts of Europe by the bronze age. In 17th century France, it was classified as a grand teint, meaning a high quality dye that was permitted to use for high quality textiles.

Weld gives clear yellows on alum mordanted wool. Overdyeing with indigo gives clear greens.

PS: The patient dyer can also cultivate weld in their own dye garden
